I am working on putting together places across Canada for everyone so they know great places to buy Heritage & Heirloom Organic Seeds: Click on the name of the company and it will take you to their website.
Not Seeds from any of Monsanto companies.
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Any living thing, plant or animal, that has had its DNA altered by humans is a GMO.
GE stands for Genetically Engineered (not General Electric). GE crops are GMOs.
So what is a backyard gardener supposed to do?
Check them out and do your Homework, that’s what. Just because a dealer sells Seminis seeds, that doesn’t arbitrarily make it a bad company. They might be family- or employee-owned, and they might have a strong commitment to stewardship and environmentalism. They also might be a company who answers to shareholders and is only concerned about their bottom line. You have to find out for yourself.
The only way to be a responsible gardener is to get involved and contact your seed dealer directly. Find out which of their products are Seminis/Monsanto and which aren’t. Find out which seeds are GE and which aren’t. Let them know you won’t buy Seminis. Let them know you won’t buy GE seed, regardless of the company of origin. Vote with your dollars. Seed dealers are like any other business… they respond to their customer’s needs. If there is no demand for Seminis seeds, then dealers will stop carrying them.

Gardeners Web supports The Safe Seed Pledge
“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately people and communities.”

They are a family farm focused on seed and herb production. Located in central Alberta, near Barrhead (120 km northwest of Edmonton), they specialize in varieties that do well in our short northern growing season. All of their seeds are open pollinated, so the seed they make can be saved, and most are classic heirloom varieties. Each year they trial new plants to evaluate their performance in the Prairie environment, adding their favourites to the selection of seeds they offer. Their 2012 trials are concentrated on staples, mainly grains and beans that are useful in small scale food production – as well as finding the tastiest early tomatoes. They currently produce most of the varieties they sell and, at least so far, they enjoy the challenge of growing more kinds of seed every year. The remainder is sourced from our network of trusted suppliers, including some of the best organic seed breeders in North America.
Greens Eggs and Ham is a 10 acre mixed farm near the Edmonton International Airport. We believe in a sustainable approach to farming and maximize nutrient use from fowl to gardens. It is important to us to produce health conscious products for ourselves and our consumers, all our products are low in saturated fats and free of common allergens.
We naturally produce odd, unusual, heritage & healthy products to add color, flavor and texture to plating. Our product line includes every possible type of vegetable we can grow, potatoes, duck eggs, duck, geese, game hens, turkeys and guinea fowl.
We do not believe in mass produced anything, be it fowl, potatoes, eggs or vegetables. Mass production has considered only that which can grow quickly, uniformly, be harvested quickly and store well with no concern for flavor and nutrition.
We do not accept status quo in anything we do but strive for better and different:
-carrots are not orange and our beets are not red
-potatoes are heritage varieties that have color, flavor and texture without butter and sour cream
-meat ducks are hybrid to ensure equal sizing of legs and breast and an even distribution of fat all around
-eggs are duck eggs, with an alkaline base, no known allergies, no digestive problems, a creamy yolk and thick egg whites, they are superior for everything.
