Organic Places Saskatchewan

I am working on putting together places across Canada for everyone so they know great places to buy Heritage & Heirloom Organic Seeds: Click on the name of the company and it will take you to their website.

Not Seeds from any of Monsanto companies.

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Any living thing, plant or animal, that has had its DNA altered by humans is a GMO.

GE stands for Genetically Engineered (not General Electric). GE crops are GMOs.

So what is a backyard gardener supposed to do?

Check them out and do your Homework, that’s what. Just because a dealer sells Seminis seeds, that doesn’t arbitrarily make it a bad company. They might be family- or employee-owned, and they might have a strong commitment to stewardship and environmentalism. They also might be a company who answers to shareholders and is only concerned about their bottom line. You have to find out for yourself.

The only way to be a responsible gardener is to get involved and contact your seed dealer directly. Find out which of their products are Seminis/Monsanto and which aren’t. Find out which seeds are GE and which aren’t. Let them know you won’t buy Seminis. Let them know you won’t buy GE seed, regardless of the company of origin. Vote with your dollars. Seed dealers are like any other business… they respond to their customer’s needs. If there is no demand for Seminis seeds, then dealers will stop carrying them.

Prairie Garden Seeds

Located in Humboldt, SK

I continue to garden without agricultural chemicals. Most of the land at St. Peter’s Ab-bey is OCIA certified organic. A number of friends and relatives, and small growers, are providing me with some seed, and I am always ready to talk to new growers. A few of my seeds are from commercial sources. They are all open-pollinated and none of the seeds are treated, but they may have been grown using agricultural chemicals. I have indicated this by placing a C (for commercial seed) after the variety name. As I am doing this work alone, filling orders is time-consuming.

Sask Garlic

~~now THIS is GARLIC!!! Chemical free garlic grown in CANADIAN SOIL~~

Garlic grown in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada near the town of Kipling.  Chemical free, hand weeded and harvested porcelain hard-neck garlic called “Music”. In 2011 our family harvested a half-acre of garlic bulbs and bulbil capsules that can be shipped across Canada. Garlic available for ordering.

Our young farm family enjoys living in the country on our section of land near Kipling, Sk. We started into garlic to diversify our farm after 3 years of doing research, talking to the Garlic Guru (Ontario), and then many conversations with the Garlic Garden (Darrell and Anna Schaab) in 2009, followed by two farm tours of The Garlic Garden (Yorkton). However, back in 2007, we were first being sparked with the idea from friends of ours in Edmonton while there for our Ranching for Profit Executive Link (EL) board meetings, and they EVERY year on our visits since have said….”SO….ARE YOU ordering garlic this year???” . We hand planted our first crop of garlic in the fall (mid-September) of 2010.
